What a Technician Sees This Time of Year
By early November, the calls we get usually sound the same. A homeowner says the door was fine all summer, but now it's groaning on cold mornings, sticking halfway up, or leaving a gap along the bottom that lets in a draft. Nine times out of ten, it's not one big problem — it's the leftover effects of a long, humid summer and hurricane season finally showing up once temperatures start swinging.
Steel panels and tracks expand and contract with Calhoun County's heat and moisture, springs and hardware pick up surface rust from the humidity, and heavy summer storms can nudge tracks or loosen hardware just enough to cause trouble once the weather turns. Winter here doesn't mean deep freezes, but it does mean cooler nights, sudden cold snaps, and gear that's been quietly wearing down since June. A little attention now prevents a stuck door on the one cold, rainy morning you're already running late.
Check the Weatherstripping and Bottom Seal
Alabama humidity causes wood-backed panels and door bottoms to swell slightly during the summer, then shrink back as the air dries out in fall. That movement is often what cracks or loosens the rubber seal along the bottom of the door and the weatherstripping around the frame.
- Look for daylight gaps along the bottom seal when the door is closed.
- Press on the seal — if it's stiff, cracked, or flattened, it won't block cold air or wind-driven rain.
- Replace worn seals before winter rain and wind start pushing moisture and cold air into the garage.
A good seal also keeps out the small critters that like to move into garages once it cools down.
Lubricate and Inspect the Moving Hardware
Hinges, rollers, and springs take a beating from humidity. Even galvanized hardware can develop surface rust after months of damp air, and rust plus cold temperatures is a common reason doors start squeaking or binding in winter.
- Wipe down visible rust on hinges, tracks, and the spring itself.
- Apply a garage-door-specific lubricant (not WD-40, which doesn't hold up) to rollers, hinges, and the spring coils.
- Check that rollers spin freely and aren't wobbling in the track — storm-season wind loads can shift alignment slightly over a season.
Give the Springs and Cables a Real Look
Springs do more work in cold weather because the metal is stiffer and the door is heavier to lift. If a spring already has visible rust pitting or a cable looks frayed, winter is when that weak point tends to fail — usually on the coldest morning, when you're already in a hurry.
Signs worth taking seriously: a door that feels heavier than usual when lifted manually, a visible gap in a spring coil, or a loud bang from the garage (a sign a spring has already broken). These aren't DIY fixes — torsion springs are under heavy tension and should be handled by someone trained to replace them safely.
Test the Opener and Battery Backup
Afternoon downpours and storm-season power blips can be hard on garage door openers, especially circuit boards and sensors that sit low enough to catch moisture. Before winter:
- Test the auto-reverse safety sensors by placing an object in the door's path.
- Check that the opener's battery backup (if installed) still holds a charge — useful for winter storms that knock out power.
- Listen for grinding or straining sounds, which often point to a motor working harder than it should.
